He is on duty beside the bell rope to the Fortress’ big alarm bell. He is to sound it if her hears the horn blast from any of the patrols or ordered to by any officer. He will keep ringing it until ordered to stop. His tour of duty is from midnight to the sixth hour indicated by a Varadh time piece. It is a boring unpopular duty but at 486, Klapper’s best years are past him. The ringing of the bell will alert all the Naug Fortress and some four myles around. On bell duty one is not allowed to leave the post or to drink alcohol.

Bishop Bhorin & Graf Lukin of Dardens

On the 12th of the Fourth Moon, Lady Laia sister of Graf Lukin reports to Bishop Bhorin that she is sure Princess Griselda is about to do something shocking. In fact she suspects she may be going to leave the Dvaunana without the King’s permission! The other ladies keep avoiding her or talking to one another in the Edin tongue which she does not understand. She thinks it is something to do with one of the Troubadour’s tales that are being read to them by Lady Ceiling. Bishop Bhorin warns Graf Lukin who camps some of his retainers under Sir Darkhen son of Dark south of the Fortress. He knows that Princess Griselda is friendly with his enemy Graf Silth and may well go towards his property at Khazdan. He himself like the Bishop, are duty bound to attend on King Granbold most of the time. Realising that Princess Griselda will try to leave at night if at all Sir Darkhen divides his force into two watches doing stints watching the Khazhap road. Sergeant Kuch commands the second watch. Each has a wooden whistle which can call the other watch assuming they are not all asleep.

Guard Patrol Encounter

As they leave the fortress they are seen by a Royal Guard patrol led by Sir Presin son of Pagan. Although he recognises both Graf Silth who is duty guard commander and Princess Griselda he thinks that it is a very strange time to be leaving the Dvaunana! Further, if Graf Silth is Guard Commander why is he leaving the fortress? Will suggest immediate return or else?

Assuming survival the party will then move on towards the Lamphern Mule depot. However on the road they will meet the rest of their party led by Sir Shure, coming towards them. “There is a pack of wolves in the Cragkreis hunting preserve! Jaun the Warden said that the birds had warned him of them. As you will know all the wolves were driven out of Neradh centuries ago, particularly in these parts! We do not know where they have come from but Jaun has gone to collect the monster Iggi. He hates wolves. Our route passes through part of the Cragkries so we must be on our guard!”

So the party must decide on its order of march along the narrow two or three abreast road.

The Wolves

The wolves were driven out of the Neradh Forest centuries ago. That is except for the part in Fimbrethin part in Limura, where they have maintained a presence. This part of the forest is peopled with the ancient Fimbrii Wosha speaking tribes. It was plentifully supplied with deer, enough for both wolves and humans until recent years. Then the Shaman Vulpano came and cast spells upon the wolves giving them larger litters. His original objective was to breed large tough wolves to join the goblin wolf riders. Most of these were killed or driven off to Hamoran and Dorith. But the Fimbrethin wolves multiplied and so threatened the survival of the deer herds. Hunger forced some of the wolves to attack the Fimbrii who tried to hunt them down. The wolves could run faster than the men and usually escaped by fleeing out onto the nearby grasslands. Unfortunately for them one of their packs killed and ate some of the Placki horse-riding tribe. As a consequence these joined with the Fimbrii in a big operation to herd all the deer off to safety and then hunt down the wolves. This they did by confining them in a smaller and smaller part of the forest. The wolves started to starve. Rhehowl the Koppelieter, (Head wolf) decided that to survive the wolves would have to invade Neradh. Its border was known to be well defended with traps and these took quite a large toll of wolves in the invasion. However in the forest there were many deer and other animals to eat. The dwarves  so far had not noticeably reacted to this incursion, despite some of them being killed and eaten! The wolves are desperately hungry.

After the skirmish with the wolves the party will travel onwards. Towards dawn they take a turn to the right down a narrow path which will in time lead to Khazdan. Half an hour after dawn they see a force of four armoured dwarves ahead of them.

When close the lead one speaks to Graf Silth. “You must go to tell King Granbold that we are at war with Limura! They have driven hordes of wolves over the border into Neradh! These have killed some of our people and ruined many of our traps!”

This is a shock to Graf Silth because the speaker is his wife Grafin Zilch daughter of Zendo! He did not recognise her in her helmet and mail! He now recognises the three plate armoured halberdiers as his own retainers. “Sir Zenith is out with the men repairing and resetting the traps!” Sir Zenith son of Zendo is Zilch’s brother.

The Iggi Monster

Back in the prehistoric times of Morval Earth There had been Dinosaurs living in the Neradh Forest. Goblins, wolves and Chaotic human tribes reduced their numbers by hunting them when the cold slowed them down. Meanwhile some wandering dwarves having discovered the rock hill at Naug, decided that it would be a good place to settle. They excavated the caves that eventually became the fortress of Naug. They mostly worshipped Irminsul the forest deity who desired that the woodland creatures be kept in balance. Saurus the Magho of the dinosaurs was wroth that his creatures were being exterminated. It was the wolves seeking out and eating all the dinosaur eggs, that sealed their fate. The last surviving dinosaur was a large Iguarnodon who sought to obtain revenge by killing as many wolves as possible. He alas was slain by a whole pack of them in the sight of Saurus. Her body was reduced to a pile of bones before some dwarves drove the wolves away. Saurus entreated Nemeke, the Magha of just retribution to bring her back to life. Nemeke could only bring her back as an undead skeleton with a spell contained in her sword of justice, obtained in a bargain with Heghate, Magho of the Undead. She was given to the Dwarves to protect their lands from wolves. They called her Iggi and once the wolves were driven away, put her into a concealed cave in the Cragkreis hunting preserve. There she dropped into suspended animation with the ambient magic in the Morval Earth air rebuilding her fatigue strength. She can be re-animated by the sounding of the magic whistle borne by the Warden of the Cragkreis hunting preserve. She has stood in her cave for centuries since no wolves have penetrated into the Neradh forest so far. The dwarves of Naug know of her existence and thus have a reduction in fear of Iggi. Their pack animals are a different matter!
