Vendola - Defenders
Comandare Alfonso Pantanoso
You are the Comandare of Vendola a port within the Arwyn
Delta, towards the Sundering Sea. Both Lawic Fara and Chaotic Elysia claim to
own Vendola but have always found it very difficult to obtain the taxes
allegedly due to them. In fact Vendola, much influenced by Chaos, like Sumeer,
has always been a city state of its own. The people are a mixture of Ombardi who
came originally from Omgano in Mid Morval Earth and Edini who came from across
the Sundering Sea. Vendola is ruled by the Consiglio, who’s Sindaco (Mayor) was
the Wizard Risenstar. He was recently killed at the battle of Elar. He was also
the head of the Larete Balokha smuggling organisation, which has suffered many
hard blows recently. You are a member of the Consiglio and until a new Sindaco
is appointed you chair its infrequent meetings. Other members of the Consiglio
are the Dwarf Werden son of Whelk, Zauben Priest of
Baphomet, Maestro Ladrino Pratico of
the Ombardi Bank, the merchant Urbano Legnati, Signor Peter Payne head of the
fisher’s Guild and landowner Conte Malvolio Estori. You are responsible for the
day to day running of Vendola, maintaining its defences and law and order. For
local law enforcement you have Capitano Uccello Legnati and his Guardiani (the
watch). They also form the bulk of your regular troops for defending Vendola in
case of attack. Most able bodied males can also be conscripted at need. The
Dwarves have their own dock and tower (Torre
dei Nani) the other side of the distributary. They tend to look after their
own interests. They collect the harbour dues for any ships landing at their dock
but have to pay the Maestro del Porto
(Port Master) Tagliarto Nete a percentage. He collects and allocates berthing
fees and has a small force of soldiers plus men to operate the cranes and
transfer goods to the warehouses. The dwarves are cave dwarves, haling from
Varadh where most of the cogs, the commonest type of vessel, come from. (The
Forest Dwarves come from Neradh) Doubtless they have burrowed caverns under
their tower but they do not allow men into them. They fly the flag of Varadh on
their tower whilst it has been the Consiglio’s policy not to fly the flags of
Elysa or Fara in case it causes embarrassment.
Even before the supremacy of Wizard Risenstar, Vendola has
been run on the Poco Fiducia (Little
trust) system. Hence the Capitano has a Cavaliere (knight) posted in the
Torre del Nordest who watches over
what happens in the port as much as looking out to sea. Your wife Donna Spia
Legnati is head of the Sentinelle del
Morale a female organisation theoretically watching over public morals but
also keeping an eye on the Capitano’s operations and not averse to a spot of
blackmail. Her ladies keep watch on top of your
Torre Grande as a check on those
watching on the other towers. The
Sentinelle del Morale is an Elysian invention with other ones in Sumeer and
Elysa. Elysia was the first state established by the Edini speaking peoples from
across the Sundering Sea. It started off by being excessively moral until
subverted by the Chaotics. Donna Spia also records the proceedings of the
Consiglio although naturally she is not a member and not allowed to speak in it.
She it is who writes out formal letters or decrees of the Consiglio.
You can hold trials of any lawbreakers who are not
members of influential families, or who are foreigners of significant
importance. These would be tried by the full Consiglio. You live with your wife
and female servants on the second floor of the
Torre Grande. The windowless first
floor contains the kitchen and accommodation for the male servants. The ground
floor has the office of the Capitano and his duty watch. Whilst you and the
Consiglio know that vessels coming to Vendola could be involved in smuggling or
piratical ventures elsewhere, it is policy not to admit this. Vendola has long
followed the Hagothic creed that
might is right. Vendola has a yard capable of repairing damaged ships and
recently a large Nef the Lamtotir, has arrived with its bow stove in. Apparently
it fought against some Thentian Lymphads who had been supporting the new King
Anghered. Its crew is mostly accommodated in the barrack near the yard. Its
Commander Victor FizValente Degollar is a refugee from the Azeladian civil war.
An illegitimate nephew of Colombo Degollar who was briefly King of part of
Azelad he brought in two of the large Nefs made there. One of them, the Evasofah
sailed out again under Commander Giacomo Estori. He came from a wealthy Vendola
family but was in the Azeladian service.
Vendola has merchant vessels calling to take on cargoes of
dinosaur bone and hides and its speciality rush baskets of salted wildfowl.
The present political situation is a little uncertain.
Whilst Fara, although it has a fleet of some cogs it prefers to build the new
Urca vessels for other powers. Thus unless it hires other states ships, it lacks
the capacity to enforces its tax claims on Vendola. Its ruler Grand Duke Cosimo
Morosini, although nominally Lawic, sends few troops to the Lawic Armies and has
stayed studiously neutral in the recent Azeladian and Baratrean civil wars. He
likes to take life easy! Elysia was exhausted militarily by wars in Hunara and
Hamora. The depredations by the notorious bandits Don Incio Fulminar and Two
Unicorn Morgana have further weakened its offensive capacity. It has only
fishing vessels of its own for a fleet pirates having done for a few cogs that
it did have. The Consiglio’s of Sumeer and Elysa are now trying to encourage
trade with the Western States, forgetting their Chaotic inclinations. Trade
there is, not least because of the many ships heading to Agetsu to keep the
Crusading Armies in Hamora supplied. Whilst your Consiglio finds it expedient to
accept such trading as is possible you personally are awake to the possibility
of some Anghered supporting fanatic coming after Victor and his crew. It is a
very long time since Vendola was physically attacked but you are uneasy. The
Consiglio put money aside for making a chain bar to close the harbour between
the Torre del Porto and the
Torre dei Nani. However it seems that
Tagliarto Nete has wasted it on other things so nothing has been done. In the
past there have been subversive strikes against particular persons living in the
Port so you keep a close eye on any foreigners arriving. In the event of an
attack the alarm triangle on the Torre
Grande will be beaten summoning you Don Tecnico (Master Engineer) or your
wife to decide if the alarm should be sounded. If it is the Flambeaux on its
turret will be lit and your trumpeter will play the alarm call. This should make
all troops to go to their stations and the militia to assemble and eventually
report to the Torre Grande. The
Flambeaux should alert people inland, and Conte Malvolio Estori should bring a
relief force from his estate properties (Militia Squad E). It has to be said
that these provisions are exceeding rusty. Hopefully Sole your trumpeter will
remember the tune! In fact each of the towers of the Port has a triangle. The
landward ones are supposed to send a messenger to you to report why they are
sounding their triangle. (Since these are all off the table they do not matter)
There are five militia squads each with a commander and a sergeant, who form up
in the positions marked ABCD on the plan. Probably your most reliable forces are
the crew of the Nef Lamtotir with 14 aboard and 30 in the Sailor’s Hostel
nearby.
