The various characters in our game wrote reports of their actions.  We played this twice once a day action and once as a night action.  Hence the different accounts and forces.

Fra Pedro Robar

To Supremo Robar,

I regret to have to inform you that the Chepkoin Indians raided us again last night. I have never heard of Indians attacking at night before! They brought ladders to climb up and attack the cabanas down through the trap doors two of which they forced open. They murdered and scalped our ploughmen Hando and Sirren with their wives. Fortunately they were interrupted before entering the second cabana. I was awakened by shots and screams and took the sisters and your three Rurales to the security of the Church. There we were joined by Corneto Lopez and others. Fighting soon subsided and although we stayed on guard all night on top of the church nothing more was seen or heard. The interruption was caused by the intervention of No Laugh and Dirty Rag and their band of Patches. Dirty Rag came here this afternoon to explain. Their band had been watching the Chepkoin but had not the strength to attack them alone. When they saw them assault the village they attacked them from behind. However then they heard many hooves coming and fled to the East. No Laugh said they afraid they might clash with the villagers if they stayed. I gave Dirty Rag four bottles of Tequila as a goodwill gesture. Seriously this means that the Patches also were ready to fight at night. If we need to have guards at night I think we will need more Rurales. We had lost Vasquez already. We will also need two new ploughmen though the plough and oxen are still with us. Two dead Chepkoin were left behind and Dirty Rag thinks they wounded several. We must hope they have had enough.

Peace be with you Cousin Fra Robar

Rolling Stone of the Chepkoin Plains Indians

Reaching the two knolls without problem we split into the three groeps as I had earlier decided. I led mine off to the right whilst mane led his to the left. However in the darkness it was difficult to find our way and there was absolute silence from the village. Then we saw movement ahead and it was Mane and his party who had their ladder against the first Cabana. He was the wrong side of the stream! There would soon be noises so I decided to lead my men round to the front of the cabanas so we could catch any coming out of their doors. Above Red lance and Mane’s brother won four scalps in the first Cabana but they had difficulty prising open the trapdoor of the second. But then we were attacked in the rear by mounted Patches! My party scrambled up our ladder pulling it after us. We exchanged fire and the Patches had many guns. Fortunately White Gun and Yellow Gun brought our horses up hearing the gunfire and the Patches thinking them a large force fled over the river. Green Bow and Grey Bow had been killed and Two Feather and Mane badly wounded so I deemed it best we should depart. The village were fully awake by now and might sortie out at us. Two of our horses were found to be missing.

No Laugh of the Patches Indians

When Snow Boots reported that the Chepkoin were attacking the village in the dark I ordered my band to take them in the rear. I warned my braves not to risk fighting the Bigote instead of the Chepkoin. We heard screams and saw that the Chepkoin were at the nearest edge of the village on foot. As we rode close they climbed up ladders onto the tops of the Cabanas. We exchanged fire and they killed one of our horses and wounded another. About half a dozen of them dropped to our fire but they were harder to hit up above us. Then we heard the hooves of many horses coming towards us. I did not think it wise to stay so with two of us double mounted we retired across the stream. There we re-organised and found that the rearguard had captured two Chepkoin horses so we were fully mounted again. From the sounds it seemed that the Chepkoin then also departed to the West. I did not want to risk any fights with the villagers so we went away. The next day I sent Dirty Rag to tell the villagers of our involvement. He brought back three bottles of firewater, a gift from the Bigote Medicine man. I followed the trail of the Chepkoin until it entered Kobardhe territory.

Aquila Nuova Report Captain Laurel Stanley

Colonel, as you ordered I led my patrol into the Sierra Marone Hills. En route I encountered Duckfoot of the Ohno Indians out of his reservation. I told him to return there but he did alert me to the passing of a band of Chepkoin Indians wearing warpaint. Since we were in Kobardhe territory at the time I regarded this as a threat to the peace and followed the bands trail. It led up into the hills and to a small village called Aquila Nuova occupied by Mexicans. We arrived to find the hostiles in the middle of a raid. I immediately ordered the charge and we managed to chase them away. I left Lootenant Hotspot with half of my patrol to check the village for any remaining hostiles, whilst I followed the retiring Chepkoin. A few miles into the hills they fled into a dense forest. Having only five men with me and knowing that the enemy numbered at least a dozen I thought it unwise to follow them into an area where we could be ambushed. Back at the village, Lootenant Hotspot reported that he had found no live hostiles remaining. The Mexicans had killed three but had lost five dead and two wounded in return. They were jubilant at the route of the Indians and the hero of the hour was a Rurale Corneto, Lopez Avelentado whose charge resulted in the three hostile fatalities. He told us we not needed and I understand that he fought against us as a cavalryman in the late war. The villagers grow corn and Agave plants. The latter for making the Tequila spirit for which they have a distillery. The village is Commanded by the Priest Fra Pedro Robar. Apparently the Robar family claim to own most of the land in this area. The villagers look relatively prosperous and it may be that a tax assessment should be made for them and the Robar family! We stayed there that night but then proceeded northwards to warn Broken Wheel town and all other people encountered, that a rogue band of Chepkoin were on the loose.

Fra Pedro Robar

It is now night time four days after the raid and things have got back to normal. You do not post sentries at night as the Indians do not attack at night. Apparently if they die in the dark they cannot find their way to the happy hunting grounds. There are a few bandidoes from south of the border but few in number they only plague small farmsteads. With all the doors locked or bolted you have little to fear from the coyotes and cougars! Downstairs sleep three Rurales for the village’s defence. They used to sleep in the distillery but it was found that they could not be trusted! The door to the kitchen down stairs is locked! Their Officer Lopez Avelentado sleeps in the Cabana beyond the church. After his recent exploits you have now far more confidence in him than you did before!

Rolling Stone

You are Rolling Stone a warrior chieftain of renown of the Chepkoin Plains Indians. You hate the white-eyes who killed your father and despise the Bigote (the Mexicans so called because of their moustaches.) The white-eyes are driving the buffalo from the plain with their herds of cattle. You gained some fame picking off isolated white-eyes and Mexicans during the war over Texas but now there is peace. Big Thumb, Chief of the Chepkoin signed a peace treaty with the white soldiers of Fort Archibald, so you went to assist the Eeroea tribe away to the North who were still fighting. But a few moons ago they too sued for peace and your heart is sick. You have returned to the Chepkoin to find even more of your grasslands have been lost and Big Thumb still will not fight! He says that there is trouble brewing amongst the white-eyes and soon they may fight amongst themselves. Then the Chepkoin shall strike and regain their lands! He has given you some young braves to train, who are hoping to earn their feathers. This has been difficult with Big Thumb forbidding any fighting! However now an opportunity for real action has arisen. The Bigote Frasco Feura has killed your brother Sitting Stone. Sitting Stone bartered a pony for ten flagons of Bigote firewater which was then found to be watered down! Sitting Stone demanded the return of the pony but Frasco shot him. Sitting Stone’s Squaw Long Lie has called for vengeance, which Big Thumb has approved, provided that it is not obtained in Chepkoin lands! Frasco has been reported to be visiting his sister at Aquila Nuova. This is a Bigote village now in the lands of the White-Eyes according to them and in the lands of the Patches Indians in reality. It is the perfect raid target as the Bigote are not a warrior people and their scalps come easily. You hope to regain the family honour by killing Frasco, successfully blood your young braves and possibly obtain some fire water, which is distilled at this village.

You have taken your band across the lands of the Kobardhe Indians and are now into the hill country of the Patches. It is now mid morning as you view the village from two hillocks covered in bushes. You can see a ploughing team at work in a nearby field but no other signs of life are visible. You, with Two Feather and Two Blue of the blue squad must decide your plan of attack:

Your Chepkoin are divided into the red and blue feather squads. All carry Dagger sized knives.

Chieftain No Laugh of the Patches Indians Aquila Nuova II

Chief Wet Blanket has ordered you to escort Dirty Rag to Aquila Nuova and patrol towards the Mexican border. Dirty Rag hopes to order a consignment of firewater for Wet Blanket. Whilst the Patches are at peace with everyone at present, it is known that some bandidoes from south of the border have invaded Patches’ territory. Not having encountered them you circled back to near Aquila Nuova. There you met Dirty Rag who had a tale to tell. No firewater was available for sale at present (something you are glad off as it robs braves of their senses!) but whilst he was negotiating, the village was raided by Chepkoin braves. Dirty Rag left, intending to drive to safety the villagers’ horses. However the Chepkoin nearly caught him and he had to abandon the steeds. This was two days ago and he had been searching for you ever since. You are naturally concerned that the Chepkoin have invaded Patches territory and decide to take an interest. You sent off Man Walks Crooked to inform Chief Wet Blanket of the hostile incursion and now seek out the Chepkoin. Since Dirty Rag reported them as being thirteen strong whilst with Dirty Rag you number only eight you do not intend anything rash. The next day you discovered that the Chepkoin had returned to near Aquila Nuova and were spying on the village. You think that they intend to attack again and camp nearby keeping watch on them. You tell your men that it is the Chepkoin invaders you are after not the Bigote inhabitants of the village!

It is night time when Snow Boots wakes you, “No Laugh, the Chepkoin are going to attack the village!”

“What fight at night? Why do you think they attack?”

“All their horses have gone to the wood by the two knolls and two foot parties are creeping towards the village. What should we do?”

“Rouse all our braves. Awake! Rouse yourselves the Chepkoin are attacking the village and we must slay them! To horse!”

“But to fight at night? What if we be killed and our souls are lost?”

“Wrong medicine. I was born under just such a moon as this why should I fear to die under it. Moon Goddess Peka Bo should protect us. Besides it will be the Chepkoin who will die, not us! Follow me!”

Your force will enter the table via entry point 33 West of the River.

Fra Pedro Robar

You are a member of the rich and powerful Mexican Robar family and are Priest of the small village of  Aquila Nuova. This village which was evacuated during the war over Texas has been re-peopled to produce tequila for the Robar family, which owns the land. Technically the village is in the USA now but the Robar do not accept this. Your flock tend the Agave bushes from whose fermented sap the tequila is distilled. Your two nuns Monja Maria and Monja Docil tend the still along with their religious duties. The village is in the hill country claimed by the Patches Indians as is most of the land owned by the Robar family. In defiance of both the Mexican Government and the USA the Robar sells Tequila to the Patches Indians in return for leather and furs. Tequila is also sold to Mexico and to the Gringo silver miners of Rayne Falls.

As it happens, this morning you have Dirty Rag of the Patches and the Miner Hard Plaice who came to inquire after tequila. Dependant upon the weather it will be three or four weeks before the next big batch is ready. The two representatives both wanted to buy all the stock you have! This is in fact destined to go South to a dealer in El Fango. You are afraid that either the Patches or the Miners will come back to take the tequila by force. Fortunately you have the famous trader and gunfighter Frasco Feura staying in the village visiting his sister Esperanza Primera. You have him and his partner Miguel Miopez to back you up. You have also of course the Rurales, or more accurately known around here as the Robares, as they are controlled by your family. In fact they contain all the troublemakers too idle to do proper work and are less than reliable. One is keeping watch from the Church roof even now. Though these are times of peace there has been trouble with the Patches and with bands of Bandidoes in the past. If the Church bell is rung the villagers are all supposed to run for shelter in the church, which has a strong door. Working parties in the fields also have Rurarles with them to deal with any mountain lions, coyotes or bears that may appear. Your Rurales are led by Corneto Lopez Avalentonado. He served in the cavalry in the late war and thinks he is still fighting it. He does not use a scythe or sickle to cut the corn, only his sword will do!

You are just outside the Curia arguing with the two representatives. You have told them they will have to wait and that some Agave is being cut and crushed even now but they are both looking angry!
